Some say even the brightest hearts grow dull

Some say even the brightest hearts grow dull
With loss and with repeated grief and pain.
That no one can keep loving to the full
When life means heartbreak time and time again.
I sit and shine my little heart; they say
I'm tempting all the gods, that I yet dare
To keep it bright. Well, I'm not one to pray,
But if I do, let these words be my prayer:
As long as there's still pain, give me a heart
With room enough to hold it. Give me strength
To live unto the fullest of my part,
To love unto my height and depth and length.
I lift my cup. So full! So may it keep.
Let my heart never dull. I drink it deep.
